Sexual abuse is a tragic &
life-changing ordeal to go through. But it does not define the victim.

Abuse investigation launched in Michigan regarding the Catholic Church

In recent times, some states have opened up sexual abuse investigations in relation to the Catholic Church. Last week, it was announced that Michigan has launched such an investigation. The announcement was made by the Michigan Attorney General's Office.

This statewide inquiry started in August. The Attorney General's Office has said that it will be an “independent, thorough, transparent, and prompt” investigation. It will look into possible incidents of abuse of children by priests, as well as whether cover-ups occurred regarding such abuse. The investigation will cover all seven of the dioceses in the state, as well as allegations regarding religious order priests. The time period the inquiry will cover is 1950 to present day.

The Attorney General's Office is asking the public to provide any information they feel could prove helpful in the investigation. It has set up ways for confidential reports of information or abuse to be made online and by phone.

One wonders what the investigation will end up finding, what actions it will lead to and what ramifications it will ultimately have.

Clergy abuse causes massive harm. So, what state authorities do to uncover such abuse and address it when it is revealed is a matter of great importance.

It is also important that survivors of clergy abuse get the justice they deserve and the support that they need. The civil legal system can provide important routes in this regard. Clergy abuse survivors can seek out caring guidance on pursuing such routes from skilled abuse victim’s rights lawyers.
