Sexual abuse is a tragic &
life-changing ordeal to go through. But it does not define the victim.

Sexual abuse and long-term health

Many different impactful issues can come up for victims of sexual abuse. This includes long-term health issues. For example, a recent study suggests that victims of such abuse have a higher likelihood of certain types of health problems.

The study looked at the health of a little over 300 women. These women were all in the 40 to 60 age range and were all non-smokers. Some of them reported having experienced sexual abuse or harassment. The study compared the health of the women who had experienced this trauma with that of those who hadn’t. Examples of areas the study found differences in include:

  • Sleep problems: The women who had experienced sexual assault or harassment had three times the likelihood of having sleep problems.
  • Anxiety: The women who were sexual assault victims had double the likelihood of having elevated anxiety.
  • Depression: The women who had been sexually assaulted had triple the likelihood of experiencing depression.

Now, as a note, the study did not present proof that sexual harassment/abuse directly caused these increased health problem likelihoods. However, the research does at least indicate that these health problems are ones that sexual abuse survivors may want to keep watch for. When health problems arise for survivors, it is crucial for them to reach out for the help, including medical help, that they need.

Now, health issues are not the only ones for which reaching out for professional help can be a very important step for sexual assault victims. For one, there are also legal issues. Experienced attorneys can give survivors guidance on seeking out justice and compensation through the civil legal system.
