Sexual abuse is a tragic &
life-changing ordeal to go through. But it does not define the victim.

New Orleans archdiocese voluntarily releases clergy abuse info

In August, a grand jury report was released naming more than 300 predator priests in Pennsylvania, that, over the years, had molested at least 1,000 children – and possibly thousands more.

Now, 57 priests and clergymen in the Archdiocese of New Orleans have been publicly named as having been alleged of sexual abuse. Some of these cases go back decades ago, and some of these men have since died. Those who died had admitted to the sexual abuse of a minor.

This information was voluntarily released by the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Archbishop Gregory Aymond expressed that the reason for releasing this information was to be transparent and to help victims heal.

In another recent case, a Catholic diocese in Iowa publicly acknowledged that a former priest sexually abused and victimized about 50 young people over the course of 20 years. The priest admitted this to the church in 1986, but the police were never contacted. Instead of admitting this publicly, the diocese announced that the priest would be taking a 6-month medical leave. He was sent to a treatment facility and never worked as a priest again.

We know that 10 states are currently investigating clergy abuse to some degree. But more should follow suit.

Sexual abuse by priests or clergy is never okay. Institutional cover-ups are never okay. Yet these things continue to happen.

Those who have suffered due to clergy abuse deserve justice. We work with the courageous survivors who are choosing to speak out against their abusers. If you wish to learn more about how we can help, please call our Michigan law office at 877-259-1189.
