Sexual abuse lawsuit brought against Ivy League school

Sexual abuse is a serious issue at college campuses throughout the nation. Sadly, we live in a world where students can end up being subjected to sexual assault or sexually predatory conduct during their pursuit of a quality education. Such abuse can have numerous and deep impacts on survivors. Legal claims may be able to help survivors in their efforts to move forward following being subjected to such abuse and its effects.

Campus sexual abuse can come from many different sources, not just fellow students. Sadly, students are sometimes harassed and abused by the very people they entrust with their education, their professors.

Issues related to professor sexual abuse can come up at colleges and universities at all levels. This includes schools generally considered to be top academic institutions. This can be seen in abuse allegations that have arisen in connection to an Ivy League school.

The school in question is Dartmouth College. A group of seven women has leveled allegations of sexual misconduct against three male professors who worked at the school. The professors were with the school's psychological and brain sciences department. Among the allegations against the professors are that they:

  • Used the academic and professional power they had over students to pressure students to drink and party with them
  • Sexually harassed students
  • Sexually assaulted and raped students
  • Pressured students to not complain

In October 2017, the school announced it was investigating the three professors. Following the investigation, two of the professors resigned and the other retired. All three have been prohibited from going onto the school's grounds and from working for the school in the future.

The seven women have brought a lawsuit against Dartmouth in relation to the alleged conduct of the three professors. In addition to the accusations against the professors, the lawsuit also contains allegations that the school failed to handled the situation properly. This includes accusations that the school didn't respond properly to prior complaints and that the school continued to encourage the seven women to work with the professors for months following them bringing their allegations to the school.

It is important for all schools to respond appropriately to allegations of professors committing sexual misconduct against students. What do you most want to see U.S. schools do to ensure such situations are properly addressed?
