Sexual abuse is a tragic &
life-changing ordeal to go through. But it does not define the victim.

2018 saw a lot of clergy abuse news

Sexual abuse by members of the clergy causes deep harm. No one should have to face this major betrayal of trust. Unfortunately, 2018 showed that clergy abuse remains a major problem here in the United States.

Last year saw a considerable amount of news related to clergy abuse in the Catholic Church. Across the nation, reports and accusations arose bringing to light alleged instances of abuse and cover-ups within the church. One prominent example of this is the grand jury report released in Pennsylvania last summer, which contained reports of decades of clergy abuse.

Among the things that have big impacts for survivors of clergy sexual assault is how church leadership, individual churches, lawmakers and law enforcement respond to reports of abuse. So, with 2019 now off to a start, a key thing to watch for is what actions will be taken by different states and by the Catholic Church this year and in upcoming years in light of the revelations that came from the plethora of clergy abuse news from 2018.

This February, there is going to be a meeting of Catholic Church leadership from across the globe at the Vatican. One wonders if this meeting will lead to any major new efforts or policies aimed at preventing abuse and protecting victims.

One also wonders what 2019 will see as far as legislative proposals in the various states related to issues regarding clergy abuse.

What would you like to see done this year to address the problem of clergy abuse?
