Sexual abuse is a tragic &
life-changing ordeal to go through. But it does not define the victim.

The #MeToo movement and workplace culture

The #MeToo movement has had considerable impacts in our society and has put a light on very important issues. One would hope that the response of businesses to this movement would be to improve their workplace cultures so that all their employees feel respected and safe from abuse and harassment. Unfortunately, it appears that this might not be happening as quickly and in as widespread of a way as would be hoped.

Recent surveys have shown that it is pretty common for female employees to indicate that they feel that not much has changed at their company since the #MeToo movement started. For example, a survey from Fairygodboss found that around seven in ten women reported that the movement hasn’t triggered any impacts at their workplace.

What do you think are the biggest barriers to major changes in workplace culture and practices being made in response to #MeToo? What do you think it will take to bring about broad change on this front in the overall U.S. work environment?

What steps can workers take to push for an improved culture at their workplace? Steps that could help include:

  • Finding powerful allies and building up networks for supporting change
  • Staying informed on workplace anti-harassment/abuse policies and practices
  • Getting involved in workplace anti-harassment/abuse efforts
  • Being an advocate for change (including shining light on the business benefits of taking a strong stance against abuse and harassment).

What steps businesses take (or don’t take) when it comes to workplace culture and practices can impact how vulnerable their workers are to harassment and abuse on the job and how likely that abuse that occurs will be covered up rather than addressed properly. Skilled attorneys can help victims of workplace sexual abuse with efforts to hold companies that have failed to properly protect workers accountable.
