Catholic Church concludes its first major summit on clergy abuse

Last weekend, the Catholic Church wrapped up a summit at the Vatican focused on the clergy abuse crisis. This was the first meeting of its kind. It lasted for four days. One hundred and ninety religious superiors and bishops were invited to it by Pope Francis.

At a mass closing out the summit last Sunday, the pope called for an "all-out battle" against clergy sex abuse and for an end to cover-ups.

The Vatican has said that, in the wake of the meeting, it will:

  • Publish an edict by the pope
  • Publish a rule-book regarding the protection of children
  • Form a task force on the issue

The summit has drawn mixed responses. Some have criticized the pope and the meeting for not putting forth much in the way of specific actions to address the scandal and hold church leadership accountable. Others have said that the meeting was a needed step and that it will help pave the way for future concrete actions by the church.

What are your thoughts on the summit?

One wonders whether there will be any major changes in rules, policies and procedures in the Catholic Church in the months following this meeting. If there are, one wonders what impacts the changes will have on the victims of clergy abuse.

Sadly, getting justice can sometimes be difficult for clergy abuse survivors. Skilled victim’s rights attorneys can guide survivors through the process of pursuing the just result they deserve. This includes helping them navigate any major changes that could have impacts on their case, such as changes in church policies and practices.
