Sexual abuse is a tragic &
life-changing ordeal to go through. But it does not define the victim.

The financial impacts of sexual abuse

The harms that come from sexual abuse are many and varied. Along with the physical, emotional and mental impacts of facing such violence, there are also major financial impacts. There have been various studies pointing to the significant economic harms that sexual abuse subjects survivors and society as a whole to.

One example is a past study from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. According to this research, rape exposes society as a whole here in the U.S. to an economic burden of $3.1 trillion. The study also found that victims of rape, on average, are subjected to over $120,000 in economic costs over their lifetime in relation to the violence committed against them.

Among the financial impacts sexual abuse can have on survivors are the costs related to getting the care they need and the losses coming from work and school time they had to miss due to the effects of the violence they have faced.

Getting the resources they need so they do not have to bear the burden of these costs can be very important for sexual abuse victims. It can help with the path to recovery.

The legal system provides survivors of campus sexual assault, clergy abuse and other types of sexual abuse with routes for seeking the financial relief they need and the justice they deserve. Experienced victims’ rights attorneys can guide survivors through the process of pursuing such routes and be a compassionate advocate for their well-being and future each step of the way.
